5 CentMary
Friday, Feb. 23, 2001
Wreck Room, Walden

I had the opportunity to check out a set from the band 5 CentMary at the Wreck Room, a live music venue in Walden. The band consists of four members; Buddy Hay (lead vocals), Peter Romano (bass, vocals), Kevin Slover (guitar) and Dave Blampied (drums).

5 CentMary began their set that night with “Suck My Kiss,” a modern rock song by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The band segued effortlessly into the next two songs, Jane’s Addiction’s “Been Caught Stealing” and the Peppers’ version of the Stevie Wonder hit, “Higher Ground.”

To add variety to the set, vocalist Hay took a break to allow bassist Romano to sing lead on “Plush” by Stone Temple Pilots.

After taking a well-deserved break, Hay came back to the stage as the band launched into a dynamic rendition of Led Zeppelin’s “What Is and What Should Never Be.” The group is well-known throughout the area for their outstanding covers of Zeppelin songs. Guitarist Slover played a superlative solo – even playing a double-neck guitar – all of which made the sound more authentic.

5 CentMary went on to perform a variety of tunes: “Animal” (Pearl Jam), “Are You Gonna Go My Way?” (Lenny Kravitz), and “Jesus or a Gun?” (Fuel).

To finish off the set, the group performed an outstanding version of the Led Zeppelin song, “Good Times, Bad Times,” and went right into their last song of the set, which was “Killing in the Name Of” by Rage Against the Machine.

5 CentMary is a well-rehearsed, well-prepared and knowledgeable group with dynamic musicians playing an excellent range of material. These are seasoned, professional musicians who are extremely entertaining. If you are looking for a night of great, radio-oriented music, chances are you’ll dig what these guys do.
